The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) estimates that demand on its network will increase by more than 25% from 150 mtpa to 200 mtpa by 2018. In 2013 ARTC explored how to improve track maintenance output and reliability by leveraging the high speed, highly mechanised track maintenance solutions offered by Swietelsky CPB Rail. The Plasser & Theurer RM80-UHR ballast cleaner and eight MFC45 single line spoil and material handling wagons were imported in 2014 from Europe, and are now in use for the next 24 months, cleaning 100km of track. The first possession was completed successfully between 30 September and 3 October 2014 with over 4 km of ballasted track cleaned. A major component of this contract is the Aligned Maintenance Possessions ballast cleaning approximately 30km of track part of which was next to a live line. Some key statistics from this exercise are: Approximately 35,700 onsite labour hours invested Completion of 30,930m of full ballast cleaning Completion of 92,790m of tamping (minimum of three passes, with dynamic stabiliser) Placement of approximately 26,180 Tonnes of new ballast, equating to 485 ballast wagons (or 22 full ballast trains) Approximately 3,825 trains passed adjacent to the worksite on the down main line. Swietelsky CPB Rail provided technical input associated with rail maintenance, asset management and strategic planning for the following activities: An assessment of how Rio Tinto currently manages its track and civil assets; An assessment of current state of service delivery compared to future state requirements, identifying gaps; Development of solutions to close identified gaps, considering company limitations and industry best-practice (including benchmarking against comparative operations); and Strategic planning (sequenced and packaged tasks) of solutions. An Asset Management Strategy with actions and improvement plans was produced and Rio Tinto and Swietelsky CPB Rail continue to work together to drive the completion of these project deliverables. Swietelsky CPB Rail resources were Gary Wyse, Paul Hawthorne (Swietelsky) and Callum Buck. Read More Regional Rail Link is a 47.5 km railway line through the inner western suburbs of Melbourne from Southern Cross Station, running through Sunshine, Tarneit and meeting the Geelong line west of Werribee. Designed to remove major bottlenecks in Victoria’s rail network, it will be operational in April 2015. Approximately 26 km of new broad gauge twin track railway was successfully constructed by Swietelsky CPB Rail using the PK1-20 sleeper laying system – the first use of this machinery in Australia. The Regional Rail Link project was named 2014 Infrastructure Project of the Year at the National Infrastructure Awards. Read More During 2013 Swietelsky CPB Rail worked with the MTM Network Asset Management Track team to complete a 900km network track health and planning assessment. Taking 4 months to complete, the assessment assisted MTM to develop their PAS55 Asset Management successful accreditation. The elements of this engagement included: Consistent and simple assessment of asset condition to prioritise works for the remaining franchise period – 1/8th by 1/8th 50 m section analysis; Packaging of work based on whether the track was suitable for a high output methodology or conventional renewals and maintenance; Long term planning for maintenance and renewals; Setting a benchmark for planning standards and expectations across the MTM business; and Cost savings with a step change in methodology to drive unit rate savings.
